Weight savings in mechanical engineering: A feed unit for cooling lubricant was optimised for the application on a machine tool.
The device, which originally weighed almost 2 kilograms, was mounted directly on the spindle carrier. This is where the additive team from HENNgineered came into play and developed a completely new feed unit. All fixed points and functional areas were taken over directly from the conventional unit. A design calculation confirmed or slimmed down the existing material thicknesses accordingly. One piece of the unit after the other was scrutinised and also recalculated. The result is impressive and more than respectable. After additive construction of the new design, more than 1.3 kilograms of weight could be saved compared to the predecessor.
The new lightweight, now weighing only 330 grams, is also significantly less expensive than the machined part. This example shows how a component can be successfully realised through consistent design and additive manufacturing.
